How do GAA fixtures work?
GAA fixtures for the major competitions, whether for hurling or Gaelic football, usually consist of provincial then national matches. Let’s take the example of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championships. The competition starts with provisional championships made up of knock-out matches – held in Connacht, Leinster, Munster and Ulster.
Following these knock-out competitions, 16 teams make their way into the All-Ireland Championship round robin, consisting of the following:
4 provincial champions
4 beaten provincial finalists
Winners of the Tailteann Cup the previous year
7 next ranked teams based on the National League
The other county teams compete in the Tailteann Cup.
The round robin features four groups of four teams, with the top three making their way through. The Quarter Finals are split into the Preliminary Quarter Finals and the All-Ireland Quarter Finals. Four teams will then make it through to the Semi-Finals with the two winners of the semis progressing to the All-Ireland Championships Final.
At BoyleSports you can bet on the outrights for the top GAA competitions as well as plenty of betting markets for individual GAA matches throughout the season.
